Josiah was 23 when he married Margaret Calvin, daughter of Robert & Margaret Calvin, on July 3, 1850. They had 2 sons and 4 daughters. In 1854, he and his family moved to Pipestone Township, Berrien County, Michigan. He located on 160 acres in the midst of heavy timber. The nearest road was one mile distant. Mr. Gano's labors were crowned with gratifying success. He possessed a good common school education. He was a Republican but always declined respectfully to accept any office. His religious views were of a liberal nature. Josiah Gano and his family suffered the loss of their buildings by fire and met other losses, but at his death (4/15/1875), he left his family in comfortable circumstances.
