Notes for Simon Sackett
On December 1, 1630 the ship Lyon laden with provisions consigned to colonists who had the preceding year accompanied or followed Lord John Northrup to New England, sailed from the seaport city of bristol. There were twenty-six on board. This was a little band of well-to-do Puritan colonists who had voluntarily left comfortable homes in order to have religious freedom. Among the heads of families of this pioneer band were: Roger Williams, Simon Sackett, John Sackett, John Throgmorton, Nicholas Bayley and others.

The family of Simon Sackett included his wife Isabel and their infant son, Simon Sackett, Jr. It was a severe voyage and they did not reach port until February 5, 1631. The voyage was so severe that Simon Sackett's health began to decline and he died in October 1635. He was a leader in this little band and helped to lay out the town of Newton (now Cambridge).

On the third day of November following, widow Isabel Sackett was granted by the courts, authhority to administer his estate. At the same session of court, the memorable decree was passed which banished Roger Williams from the colony. Mrs. Williams was probably entertained by Widow Sackett. In June 1636, Widow Sackett and her boys removed with Reverend Hooker's congregation about one hundred miles through the wilderness to Hartford. Isabel Sackett became the second wife of William Bloomfield. Acquired by Russell Sackett and provided by Debra King, Elkhart, Indiana. [237]
